The whole piece measures about 30 x 40 mm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI began with the pearl and asked what it would have become had it stayed in the shell a few more years. The ring is that answer. The gold continues the pearl's own curves and wraps it on both sides, sculpted by hand in wax and then cast. Keshi pearls grow without a nucleus, so no two share the same form.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe finish is matte, with polished veins that follow the form and lift its three dimensional shape, so the pearl and the gold read as one piece. Worn, it sits on the hand as a small sculpture rather than a setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe matte comes last. Many makers use a matte finish to hide flaws, so I do the opposite: the whole ring is first polished to a full shine, where any casting pore or imperfection shows.
