A green oval tourmaline of 1.00 carat beside a rubellite of 0.63 carat, the deep pink red variety of the same stone. Two colors of one mineral, set close enough that each one sharpens the other.

The name comes from the sky. VY Canis Majoris, in the constellation of the Great Dog, is a red hypergiant and one of the largest stars known, and the red of the rubellite is the color it burns. The gold around the stones is matte on the outside and polished on the inside, so the color stays on the stones and the gold stays quiet. Seen from above, the ring is 13 mm across at its widest point.
