Nelli is the first engagement ring I ever designed, almost two decades ago, long before I opened my own studio. It is still one of my favorites, and it still sells. That is the whole argument I make to clients who come in asking for whatever shape is current: a design that was right when it was made does not stop being right.

What makes it work is the meeting of two curves. The marquise is pointed at both ends and widest in the middle. The band does the opposite of what a band usually does, starting thick under the stone and tapering as it comes around the finger. Neither one is a straight line. The eye reads the stone as sitting above the metal rather than in it, and the diamond seems to float.

As made: a 0.44 carat marquise cut natural diamond, G color, VS clarity, with a GIA certificate, in brushed 18K yellow gold. The brushed finish carries through the yellow and rose gold. White gold is finished bright.
