Ortal's husband came in looking for an anniversary present. What he chose was a marquise tourmaline, and the stone is the reason the ring works. A marquise is a long cut, pointed at both ends, and in a colored stone it holds light differently than a diamond does. It goes deep rather than bright.

The setting stays out of the way. A slim tapered band, a low head, nothing competing with the color.

The ring is shown here in pink tourmaline and in green. Both are natural stones and both are the same price. The stone is chosen from what is in the studio at the time, so the exact weight varies from ring to ring. The one photographed is 0.46 carats.
