Vered's mother had a ring, and her mother has been gone for many years. The ring went too, taken from the house in a break-in along with everything else of her mother's that she had left. For years afterwards she looked for it, in shop windows wherever she travelled, hoping it might have surfaced somewhere. She found rings that were close. None of them were it.

Her partner sent me a photograph and asked whether the ring could exist again. She did not want a copy of something similar. She wanted that ring back.

She also loves hearts. Not as decoration, she was clear about that, and I understood her. So I put them where they would not be the first thing anyone saw.

The profile of the band is a heart, carried along its full length. Cut the ring anywhere and the cross-section comes out heart shaped. The frame around the sapphire is built from heart forms that read as scrollwork until you look closely. And underneath, on the back of the halo where only the wearer knows it is there, the whole base is a lattice of hearts open to the light.

Hearts keep returning in the pieces made for Vered. A gold leaf in the shape of one covers a side of her Rough Garnet Ring, and in her Coral Heart Pendant the sea made the shape without any help from me.

At the center is an oval blue sapphire, 0.85 carats, natural. Around it, 85 round diamonds, 0.55 carats in all, set through the halo and down into the openwork beneath. In 18K white gold, the sapphire reads cold and deep against the metal, the way it should.

Choosing the stone

The price above is for the ring as shown. A sapphire is priced by color, clarity and origin as much as by weight, so a different center stone changes the number in either direction. The same is true of the diamonds. Write to us with what you have in mind and we will price the ring before anything is made. Other gemstones and other golds are possible.
