Zina had a ballerina ring she could not wear. The knuckle was wider than the finger, which is common and which most jewelers answer by resizing the ring larger, so it then spins and hangs loose all day. She had been told to live with it.

What she needed was a ring that opens. Not a hinged shank of the kind that sits proud on the finger, but a mechanism invisible when closed, smooth against the skin, and impossible to release by accident.

It took two weeks of sketches and failed attempts. The lock is built in three parts, each depending on the next, so no single one of them can move on its own. It opens only under a pointed tool pressed at one specific point. Nothing you do with your hands, in a pocket, against a coat, will open it. Once the mechanism was right, the top of her ring, the sapphire and its taper baguettes, was cut away from the original shank and soldered onto the new one.

What this is

If you have a ring you cannot get over the knuckle, or one that fits the knuckle and then turns on the finger, this can be built into it. Your ring, opened at the back, fitted with the lock, finished so the join does not read. It works on any ring with a shank of at least 3 mm, in 14K or 18K gold, in any color.

The opening tool is supplied with the ring. If it is lost, we send a replacement at no cost, as many times as needed.
