A sea urchin test, the shell left behind after the animal is gone, has ridges running from the center out to the rim and rows of small bumps between them. Each earring carries that surface on a small dome of gold, ridge by ridge, with a blue sapphire set at the center where the ridges meet.

The back is where most people never look, and it is worked just as carefully. Each earring sits on a gold plate pierced by hand with a saw into a pattern of petals opening out from the post, so the earring is finished on both sides, and the gold catches light through the openings.

They come in two sizes, 9 mm for every day and 13 mm for more presence on the ear, and close with butterfly backs. They are made as a set with the Sea Urchin Ring.

One pair of each size is finished and in the studio now, in 14K yellow gold. They can also be made in 18K gold, write to us for a price.
