Made to order. This one was made for a client, around a stone cut to fit it.

A client pointed me toward a ring in the museum, excavated in the City of David and made about 2,300 years ago, set with a deep red garnet. I went to see it. Looking at it from the side, I saw something the original may or may not have intended: two figures rising on either side, meeting above the stone, holding it between them like a pair of wings. That reading is mine. I built this version around it.

The ruby is 2.6 carat, cut to the exact dimensions of the setting by a lapidary I work with, so the gold closes around it without a gap on any side. The surface moves between matte and polished, and a braided line of gold runs around the base, the technique those goldsmiths were using when the original was made.
